Wholesale PricingThe 1/2-inch x 10-foot Electric Metallic Tube (EMT) conduit is a lightweight galvanized steel raceway used to house and protect electrical conductors in commercial, industrial, and residential installations. Often called "thin-wall" conduit by contractors, the 1/2-inch trade size is the most widely used dimension for branch circuit wiring, balancing internal conductor capacity with a slim profile for efficient routing in walls, ceilings, and exposed-work applications.
EMT is non-combustible and does not emit toxic smoke under fire conditions, making it the preferred raceway for life-safety system wiring including fire alarm control panels, smoke detectors, and emergency lighting circuits. The galvanized steel construction resists corrosion in damp indoor environments, and the steel tube also reduces electromagnetic interference (EMI) affecting sensitive data and communication cables routed near power circuits.
Installation Advantages
- Threadless Fittings: EMT uses set-screw or compression-style couplings and connectors rather than threaded joints, which significantly reduces installation time compared to Rigid Metal Conduit (RMC).
- Field Bending: The 1/2-inch size can be cut with a standard hacksaw or tube cutter and shaped with a manual hand bender to create offsets and saddles around structural obstructions.
- Equipment Grounding Path: Under specific conditions defined in NEC Article 250, properly installed EMT and its metallic fittings may serve as the Equipment Grounding Conductor (EGC), eliminating the need to pull a separate green ground wire and reducing conduit fill.

Conductor Fill per NEC Article 358 (40% Rule)
For three or more conductors, the total cross-sectional area of all conductors must not exceed 40% of the conduit's internal area. For standard THHN/THWN-2 wiring in 1/2-inch EMT, NEC Table C1 allows the following maximum conductor counts:

- Support and Strapping: Per NEC 358.30, EMT must be securely fastened within 3 feet of every box, conduit body, or termination, and at intervals not exceeding 10 feet thereafter.
- Bend Limitation: Per NEC 358.26, the total angle of bends between pull points (junction boxes or condulets) cannot exceed 360 degrees. Exceeding this makes wire pulling impractical and risks conductor insulation damage.
- Coupling Integrity: In high-vibration environments, set-screw fittings should be verified tight during inspections to maintain the continuous grounding path.
- Corrosion Monitoring: EMT in damp locations should be inspected periodically for surface oxidation that could eventually compromise the conduit wall.
Is 1/2-inch EMT conduit fire-rated?
EMT itself is non-combustible and does not carry an hourly fire resistance rating the way a fire door or fire-rated assembly does. However, it is a recognized component in fire-rated wall and ceiling assemblies. Unlike PVC conduit, EMT does not contribute fuel to a fire and does not emit toxic smoke when exposed to heat.
Can I run 1/2-inch EMT underground?
Generally, no. For direct burial or concrete encasement applications, Schedule 40 or Schedule 80 PVC conduit or appropriately coated Rigid Metal Conduit (RMC) is required. EMT is intended for interior use or above-grade exterior use with listed weatherproof fittings.
How many 90-degree bends can I have in a single run?
Per NEC 358.26, the total bends between pull points cannot exceed 360 degrees (equivalent to four 90-degree bends). Exceeding this makes it practically impossible to pull wire without damaging conductor insulation.
