A 1/2-inch galvanized malleable iron tee for use in fire suppression system discharge piping. A tee is a three-connection fitting that creates a branch from a straight pipe run, with two connections in line and one perpendicular. In fire suppression system piping, tees are used where a single pipe run must split to feed agent to multiple nozzle positions or where a branch must be added to supply a secondary leg of the discharge network.
Galvanized malleable iron fittings are zinc-coated for corrosion resistance. Before installing galvanized fittings in a fire suppression system, confirm that the specific system's installation manual permits galvanized iron pipe and fittings, as some systems (such as the Buckeye Kitchen Mister) specifically require black or chrome-plated pipe and prohibit galvanized. Piping material requirements vary by system and jurisdiction. The certified installer must confirm the correct pipe and fitting material for each installation per the applicable system installation manual and the authority having jurisdiction.
Fire Suppression Pipe Fitting Family
This tee belongs to the same family of standard fire suppression system pipe fittings as the galvanized unions (1/2-inch and 3/4-inch), galvanized coupling (1/2-inch), and black iron plugs (3/8-inch and 1/2-inch). All are used in the discharge piping network of pre-engineered wet chemical and dry chemical fire suppression systems. Consult the relevant system installation manual and the certified installer for correct material, size, and fitting selection.

What is the difference between a tee and a coupling in fire suppression piping?
A tee has three connections and creates a branch from a straight pipe run. A coupling has two connections and joins two straight pipe ends in a continuous run without branching. A union also has two connections like a coupling, but is designed to allow the pipe run to be disconnected at that point for servicing without unthreading the entire line.
Why are galvanized fittings sometimes used instead of black iron?
Galvanized fittings are zinc-coated for corrosion resistance, making them preferable in installations where the piping may be exposed to moisture or humid environments. Black iron fittings may be required by some suppression system manuals or preferred in specific applications. The system installation manual specifies which materials are acceptable for each installation.
