Description
Amerex KP 2xR Nozzle | Range / Griddle / Zone Defense | 2 Flow Points | 14178 | OEM

The Amerex 14178 is the 2xR (two flow-point Range) nozzle for the Amerex KP Restaurant Fire Suppression System, designed for 4-burner range and griddle protection and used as the primary nozzle in Amerex's Zone Defense system design approach. With 2 flow points consumed per nozzle, it delivers the agent volume required to protect a 24-inch by 24-inch coverage module or a 4-burner range up to 48 inches wide by 30 inches deep per the KP design charts. The 2xR designation reflects both the flow characteristic and the appliance type; "R" corresponds to the range application in the Amerex KP nozzle family.

All Amerex KP nozzles are designed around the system's flow-point approach, in which each cylinder's agent supply is sized based on the total flow points of all the nozzles it supplies, rather than a fixed agent volume. The 14178 consumes 2 flow points per nozzle. It is identified by tactile feel through its single groove (no rings), which allows a technician to identify the nozzle type by touch even in the hot, dark, and congested space inside a commercial kitchen hood. A cap (either the standard P/N 12334 or high-temperature P/N 12504 for high-heat locations) is installed on the nozzle orifice to protect it from grease and debris until discharge. A swivel adapter (P/N 16440) is available for all KP nozzles to allow correct aiming without rotating the fixed piping.

The Amerex KP Nozzle Family

The Amerex KP system uses six primary nozzle types, each designated by a flow rating and a letter code corresponding to the appliance type it protects. All nozzles use a 3/8-inch NPT thread and include a nozzle cap. The family is: 11982 (1x38, Appliance/Plenum, 1 flow point, 2 rings), 11983 (1x55, Solid Fuel Charbroiler/Duct, 1.5 flow points, 3 rings), 11984 (0.5x71, Upright Broiler/Salamander, 0.5 flow points each, 4 rings), 14178 (2xR, Range/Griddle/Zone Defense, 2 flow points, 1 groove), and 16416 (1xD, Duct, 1 flow point, no groove and no rings). The swivel adapter (P/N 16440) and caps (standard P/N 12334 and high-temperature P/N 12504) are compatible across all nozzle types.

Certifications UL Listed (UL 300), NFPA 17A and 96 Compliant

The Amerex KP system is a pre-engineered wet chemical system under NFPA 17A and NFPA 96. Installation and service must be performed by an Amerex-certified installer following the KP Design, Installation, Maintenance, and Recharge Manual.

  • Nozzle Type is Appliance-Specific: The 14178 is specifically designated for range and griddle protection and Zone Defense configurations. It cannot be substituted for other nozzle types in a position designated for the 11982, 11983, 11984, or 16416 nozzle without re-evaluating the system design.
  • Cap Inspection: Confirm the cap is present and undamaged at each semiannual inspection. The cap prevents grease accumulation in the nozzle orifice during standby. Replace after any actuation or if found damaged.
  • Semiannual Service: All nozzles are inspected for blockage, correct positioning, and aim at each required semiannual service visit per NFPA 17A.

What is Zone Defense in the Amerex KP system?

Zone Defense is an Amerex KP system design approach in which a single 14178 (2xR) nozzle positioned over a 24-inch by 24-inch module protects that area using 2 flow points. This can simplify system design and piping layouts compared to using multiple 1-flow-point nozzles for the same area. The certified Amerex installer determines whether a Zone Defense approach or individual appliance nozzle placement is appropriate for a given kitchen layout.

How do I identify the 14178 by touch inside the hood?

The 14178 has a single machined groove and no tactile rings, which distinguishes it by feel from the other KP nozzle types (11982 has 2 rings, 11983 has 3 rings, 11984 has 4 rings, and 16416 has no groove and no rings). All nozzles are also stamped with their part number.
