The Amerex 12524 is an OEM single-pole double-throw (SPDT) snap action microswitch with 18-inch pre-wired leads for the Amerex KP Restaurant Fire Suppression System. It mounts inside the Mechanical Release Module (MRM), MRM II, or Pneumatic Release Module (PRM) and activates the moment the system discharges, switching its contacts to control auxiliary output functions.
One P/N 12524 switch is pre-installed as the standard electrical output switch in both the MRM and PRM at the factory, providing a ready-to-wire output from the moment the module is installed. The switch can drive any combination of the following auxiliary functions on system actuation: electrical power shutoff to cooking appliances, operation of an electrical gas valve, sounding of an audible or visual alarm, shutdown of supply air fans, or energizing a relay for additional control. In the MRM II, the factory configuration also includes a second switch (P/N 18312) specifically for alarm-initiating connection to a fire alarm panel. Up to three additional P/N 12524 switches can be added to the MRM (total of four), and up to two additional switches can be added to the MRM II (total of four between both switch types). The 18-inch pre-wired leads simplify field wiring connections inside the module enclosure.

- Stackable Inside Module: Additional switches stack inside the MRM enclosure without requiring extra mounting hardware, as specified in the Amerex KP manual. The module's internal geometry accommodates up to the maximum number of switches listed above.
- Wiring by Certified Installer: Switch wiring to auxiliary circuits must be performed by an Amerex-certified installer. Field electricians may perform the wiring to the building's electrical systems on the load side, but the switch connections within the module are the certified installer's responsibility.
- Alarm-Initiating Function: If the installation requires a connection to a fire alarm panel for alarm initiation, the dedicated alarm-initiating switch (P/N 18312) should be used rather than a 12524. The 12524 is for non-alarm-initiating auxiliary outputs.
- Semiannual Service: Switch function is verified at each required semiannual service visit by confirming that all connected auxiliary circuits actuate correctly on system discharge simulation.
What is the difference between the 12524 and the 18312 alarm-initiating switch?
The 12524 is specified for general electrical signaling and auxiliary control functions including power shutoff, gas valve operation, fan shutdown, and relay actuation. The 18312 is specifically designated for alarm-initiating connection to a fire alarm panel. In the MRM II, both are pre-installed at the factory, providing one output for auxiliary functions and one for alarm panel connection out of the box.
Can I use this switch to shut off cooking appliances directly?
The switch itself is rated for a specific electrical load. For high-amperage appliances that exceed the switch's rating, a relay or magnetic contactor sized for the appliance must be used as an intermediate device, with the 12524 switch energizing the relay coil rather than the appliance directly. The Amerex KP manual specifies the correct approach for each auxiliary output type.
