Description

ANSULEX Low pH Liquid Fire Suppressant (P/N 079372) is the Ansul-specified wet chemical agent for use in the Ansul R-102 Restaurant Fire Suppression System. It is packaged in 3-gallon (11.4 L) pails sized for field recharge of the R-102 agent tanks following a discharge or during the 12-year maintenance cycle. This agent is designed for use only in the R-102 system and should not be used in any other fire suppression system or as a substitute for another manufacturer's specified agent.

ANSULEX works by two simultaneous mechanisms when discharged onto a cooking appliance fire. First, the agent provides rapid flame knock-down and surface cooling. Second, when the agent contacts hot cooking grease, it undergoes saponification, a chemical reaction that produces a soap-like foam layer on the surface of the fat. This foam blanket insulates the hot grease from the atmosphere, preventing flammable vapors from escaping and significantly reducing the risk of re-ignition after the fire is knocked down. The resulting vapor-securing blanket is one of the primary reasons the R-102 system is effective on commercial grease fires, where re-flash from a hot grease surface is the critical suppression challenge.

Electrical Hazard Limitation

ANSULEX is not rated for use on fires involving energized electrical equipment. This is a critical operational limitation: if electrical equipment in the protected area is involved in a fire or could reasonably be energized during discharge, gas and electrical shutoffs must be confirmed functional and must activate as designed before agent contacts any electrical component. Per NFPA 17A and the R-102 system design, gas and electrical appliance shutoffs are integrated into the system actuation to address this.

The R-102 system is a pre-engineered wet chemical system under NFPA 17A. Agent recharge must be performed by an authorized Ansul R-102 distributor following the R-102 Design, Installation, Recharge, and Maintenance Manual.

  • Use Only ANSULEX in R-102 Systems: Substituting a different agent, even one marketed as compatible, voids the system's UL listing and the Ansul warranty.
  • 12-Year Agent Replacement: The R-102 system requires replacement of the extinguishing agent at the 12-year maintenance interval even if no discharge has occurred, per the Ansul maintenance schedule.
  • Post-Discharge Recharge: Following any system actuation, the agent tanks must be refilled with fresh ANSULEX before the system is returned to service. Do not return the system to service without completing a full recharge and reset by an authorized distributor.
  • Cleanup: ANSULEX is non-corrosive and does not require unusual post-discharge cleanup procedures. Flush the agent from kitchen surfaces as soon as possible after a discharge using standard cleaning methods.

Can I use this agent in a Pyro-Chem Kitchen Knight II or another wet chemical system?

No. ANSULEX is designed and listed for use only in the Ansul R-102 system. The Ansul PIRANHA, Pyro-Chem Kitchen Knight II, and other wet chemical systems each have their own specified agents. Using ANSULEX in any system other than the R-102 voids that system's listing and may affect suppression performance.

How long can a sealed pail of ANSULEX be stored before use?

The storage life is 12 years in sealed, original packaging stored in appropriate conditions. After opening, the agent should be used promptly for recharge. Do not store a partial pail for later use.

Is ANSULEX safe to use near cooking equipment and food surfaces?

ANSULEX has a pH of 7.8 to 8.2, which is essentially neutral, making it non-corrosive to common kitchen materials including stainless steel, mild steel, galvanized metal, aluminum, and brass. Flush all surfaces promptly after a discharge as part of standard post-fire cleanup.
