Wholesale PricingThe Badger 253538 (P/N WK-253538-000) is a positive-action ratcheting crimping tool specifically engineered for 1/16" stainless steel wire rope used in fire suppression detection cable runs. The internal ratcheting mechanism prevents the handles from opening until the mechanical compression cycle is 100% complete, eliminating the short-cycling that is common with standard pliers and hardware-store crimpers. This ensures every aluminum oval sleeve or copper oval sleeve reaches its maximum compressive threshold, forcing the metal to cold-flow into the valleys of the cable strands and creating a bond capable of withstanding the constant tension required for reliable kitchen suppression detection systems.
Standard crimpers lack this positive-action mechanism. A short-cycled crimp may appear visually complete but will slip under load, compromising the detection line and voiding the UL listing. The Badger 253538 is the OEM-authorized wire rope crimp tool for Badger systems and is also the approved tool for 1/16" cable lines in Kidde WHDR systems, which share the same mechanical platform.

Go/No-Go Gauge Verification
After each crimp, verify the finished sleeve fits the 1/16" slot of a go/no-go gauge. If the sleeve does not pass, the tool may require calibration or the crimp cycle was not fully completed. Never accept a crimp that fails gauge verification.
Sequential Crimping
For standard oval sleeves, apply two separate crimps -- one at each end of the sleeve -- rather than a single center crimp. This prevents the sleeve from bending under high tension and ensures both ends of the cable are fully captured.
Tension Before Final Crimp
Always pull the cable tight and verify correct tension before executing the final crimp. The 253538 locks tension in place; once the ratchet cycle completes, the position is set permanently.
Pivot Point Lubrication
Apply a drop of lightweight oil to the pivot points monthly to keep the jaw teeth smooth and ensure the ratchet mechanism cycles cleanly. This is particularly important in the humid, grease-laden environment of a commercial kitchen hood.
Can I use a standard hardware store crimper for 1/16" fire cables?
No. Standard crimpers lack the positive-action ratcheting mechanism, allowing for short-cycling that produces a crimp that appears complete but will slip under load. Using a non-OEM crimper voids the UL listing and can result in detection line failure and insurance denials.
Does this tool work for Kidde WHDR systems?
Yes. Badger and Kidde share the same mechanical platform for many pre-engineered systems. The 253538 is the authorized crimp tool for the 1/16" cable lines found in Kidde WHDR units.
What are the final steps after crimping?
Once the cable is crimped and the pull pin is set, install new tamper seals on all system components to document that the system is ready for service. This is a standard requirement of any professional fire suppression system installation and inspection record.
