Wholesale PricingThe Amerex 12856 is a 10 cubic-inch nitrogen actuation cartridge for use in both Amerex IS industrial dry chemical and Amerex KP wet chemical kitchen fire suppression systems. Pre-charged to 1,800 PSI at 70°F, this cartridge supplies the high-pressure nitrogen gas needed to trigger the agent discharge valve when the system activates. In plain terms: it's the gas-powered trigger that opens the suppression cylinder valve and gets the fire-fighting agent moving toward the nozzles. Without a properly charged actuation cartridge, the system cannot discharge agent even if everything else is working correctly.
This cartridge is a single-use component once punctured during system activation, it's depleted and must be replaced before the system can be re-armed. It's also replaced on a scheduled basis even without a discharge: over time, a small amount of nitrogen can slowly leak through the cartridge seals, and a partially depleted cartridge may not supply enough pressure for reliable valve actuation. Checking cartridge pressure is part of every semi-annual NFPA 17A and NFPA 96 inspection, and a cartridge that reads below its rated pressure gets replaced on the spot.
Pre-charged to 1,800 PSI at 70°F, the 12856 cartridge supplies the high-pressure nitrogen gas needed to trigger agent discharge valves in Amerex IS and KP systems. Depending on the system configuration and piping length, one cartridge may support actuation of multiple agent cylinders simultaneously. Check the Amerex IS or KP system documentation for your specific configuration. This is an OEM Amerex cartridge, the correct pressure specification and flow characteristics are engineered for Amerex's discharge valve geometry. Using a generic nitrogen cartridge with a different pressure or flow rate risks sluggish or failed valve actuation. Available through authorized Amerex distributors. Replace after any discharge and per the scheduled service interval in the Amerex IS or KP system documentation.

Semi-Annual Pressure Check
At every semi-annual NFPA 17A and NFPA 96 inspection, the technician will verify the 12856 cartridge pressure is within the rated range. A cartridge reading below the specified minimum pressure must be replaced immediately, do not return the system to service with an undercharged actuation cartridge. The cartridge pressure should be checked with a calibrated gauge per the Amerex IS or KP system inspection procedure.
Post-Discharge Replacement
After any system discharge, the 12856 cartridge is depleted and must be replaced before the system can be re-armed. Install a new cartridge, verify the pressure reads correctly, and complete all other post-discharge service steps (valve rebuild, agent recharge) before returning the system to armed service. Document cartridge replacement in the fire suppression system inspection record.
Can I use the 12856 in my ANSUL R-102 system?
No. The 12856 is designed for Amerex IS and KP system valve geometries and actuation pressure specifications. ANSUL R-102 systems use their own actuation cartridge or air cylinder assembly (like the 015733). Mixing actuation components across system brands risks incorrect pressure delivery and potential valve actuation failure. Always use the actuation cartridge specified by the system manufacturer for your specific installation.
Is the 12856 cartridge considered a hazardous material for shipping?
Yes, the 12856 is a pressurized gas container and is subject to DOT hazardous materials shipping regulations. It must be shipped in accordance with applicable DOT rules for compressed gas cylinders. Your authorized Amerex distributor handles compliant shipping. Do not attempt to ship pressurized cartridges through standard mail carriers without verifying hazmat compliance.
