Description
Range Guard DPDT Micro Switch for A+ Systems | Part No. 9197228

The Range Guard 9197228 is a double-pole, double-throw (DPDT) micro switch for Range Guard A+ kitchen fire suppression systems. Where the SPDT switch (9197227) controls one piece of equipment when the system fires, this DPDT version controls two independent circuits simultaneously — for example, cutting power to the exhaust fan and shutting off the fryer at the same time, all from a single switch activation. This is the go-to choice for commercial kitchens that need to automatically shut down multiple things at once the moment the suppression system goes off.

NFPA 96 requires that both gas and electric cooking equipment be automatically shut off when a kitchen fire suppression system activates. In kitchens with both gas appliances and electric appliances — or with both cooking equipment and exhaust fans to control — the DPDT 9197228 handles both shutdowns from one switch, keeping the wiring simpler than using two separate SPDT switches. The "double-throw" design means each pole has its own normally-open and normally-closed contacts, giving you flexibility in how you wire each circuit — whether you need to open a circuit to cut power or close a circuit to trigger an alarm.

This is an OEM part built specifically for Range Guard A+ systems. Like all Range Guard electrical components, it must be tested at every six-month inspection per NFPA 17A and NFPA 96 to confirm both poles trip correctly and all connected equipment responds. A switch that controls two things but only one pole fires is still a failed switch — both poles must be verified working. Available through authorized Range Guard distributors.

During every semi-annual NFPA 17A and NFPA 96 inspection, the technician will trigger a simulated system discharge and verify both poles of the 9197228 switch fire correctly — and that both connected circuits respond as intended. Both poles must be tested independently. A switch where only one pole fires is a failed switch and must be replaced before the inspection can be signed off. The technician will document switch test results on the fire suppression system inspection record. If either of the connected pieces of equipment fails to shut off during the test, troubleshoot from the switch outward — check the switch, then the wiring, then the connected device's power circuit.

Do I need the SPDT or DPDT switch for my Range Guard system?

It depends on how many things your system needs to shut off automatically when it fires. If you only need to control one circuit (one fan, one appliance, or one alarm input), use the SPDT (9197227). If you need to control two circuits at the same time, use the DPDT (9197228). Your original Range Guard system design drawings will specify which switch is required — or your fire suppression service technician can confirm which one your installation uses.

Can I use a generic DPDT switch instead of the 9197228?

No. The 9197228 is built and listed specifically for Range Guard A+ system control head integration. Generic DPDT micro switches from hardware suppliers may not have the correct actuation force, current rating, or mounting geometry for the Range Guard control head — and using them voids your system's UL listing. Always use the OEM 9197228 sourced from authorized Range Guard distributors.
