Description
Badger Range Guard R Nozzle | Wet Chemical Kitchen Suppression | 87-120019-001 | Sold Individually

The Badger Range Guard R Nozzle (P/N 87-120019-001) is the range burner protection nozzle in the Badger Range Guard Wet Chemical Fire Suppression System, used to protect gas and electric range burner cooking surfaces in commercial kitchens. Like all Range Guard nozzles, it is stamped with its nozzle type and uses a 3/8-inch NPT female thread connection into the agent discharge piping. Each nozzle type in the Range Guard family is engineered for a specific hazard geometry: nozzle selection, placement, and aiming are not interchangeable between types, and each must be positioned and aimed exactly as specified in the Range Guard Design, Installation, Recharge, and Maintenance Manual for the system's UL 300 listing to remain in effect.

The Range Guard system uses Karbaloy wet chemical agent, a proprietary potassium-based solution that suppresses cooking grease fires through rapid flame knockdown, surface cooling, and saponification. When discharged onto hot cooking grease, Karbaloy reacts chemically with the burning fat to form a soap-like foam layer that insulates the grease surface from the atmosphere, interrupting the combustion chain and preventing re-ignition. The system is activated automatically by fusible link or thermo-bulb detection in the plenum and over the protected appliances, or manually via a remote pull station. Upon actuation, the UCH (Universal Control Head) simultaneously actuates up to 20 agent storage containers, shuts off gas and electrical power to protected appliances, and activates the building fire alarm. Karbaloy does not require unusual post-discharge cleanup procedures and is rated non-corrosive to the stainless steel, mild steel, galvanized metal, aluminum, and brass commonly found in commercial kitchens.

The Range Guard Nozzle Family

There are seven nozzle types in the Badger Range Guard system, each calibrated for a specific commercial cooking appliance type. All seven use 3/8-inch NPT female threads and all are stamped with their type designation. The other six nozzles in the family are: LPF (Low Proximity Fryer, P/N 87-120023-001), LPR (Low Proximity Range, P/N 87-120025-001), GRW (Griddle, Range, and Wok, P/N 87-120013-001), F (Gas Radiant/Electric Charbroiler, P/N 87-120012-001), DM (P/N 87-120020-001), and ADP (Upright Broiler, P/N 87-120016-001). A swivel adapter (P/N 87-120021-001) is available for use with any nozzle to facilitate proper aiming. All nozzles use a disc cap (P/N 60-9197290-000) to seal the orifice except the LPR, which uses its own dedicated cap (P/N 87-120026-001).

The Range Guard system is a pre-engineered wet chemical system under NFPA 17A and NFPA 96. Installation and service must be performed by an authorized Badger Range Guard distributor per the Range Guard Design, Installation, Recharge, and Maintenance Manual (P/N 60-9127100-000).

  • Nozzle Selection is Appliance-Specific: Each nozzle type has been designed and tested for specific appliances and coverage geometries. The system design determines which nozzle type is correct for each position. Do not substitute nozzle types outside the as-built system design.
  • Cap Inspection: Confirm the disc cap is in place and undamaged at each semiannual inspection. The disc cap prevents heat build-up from rupturing the foil seal on the nozzle during standby. Replace after any actuation or if found damaged.
  • Semiannual Service: All nozzles are inspected for blockage, physical damage, correct positioning, and correct aiming at each required semiannual service visit per NFPA 17A.

Can I replace one nozzle type with another if the original is unavailable?

No. Each nozzle type has a specific flow number and spray geometry engineered for a particular appliance. Substituting a different nozzle type changes the hydraulic balance of the system and the coverage geometry over the protected appliance, which voids the system's UL 300 listing. Only the exact nozzle type specified in the system's as-built design may be installed in each position.

What is the Karbaloy agent and how does it differ from other wet chemical agents?

Karbaloy is Badger's proprietary potassium-based wet chemical suppression agent. It works by cooling the grease surface and undergoing saponification with burning cooking fat, forming a foam layer that seals the fuel surface from the atmosphere and prevents re-ignition. Karbaloy is not interchangeable with agents from other manufacturers' systems, including ANSULEX (Ansul R-102) or the Pyro-Chem wet chemical agent. Only Badger-specified Karbaloy recharge should be used in Range Guard systems.

What is the swivel adapter for?

The swivel adapter (P/N 87-120021-001) can be used with any of the seven Range Guard nozzle types to allow the nozzle to be aimed at the correct coverage point without rotating the discharge piping. This is especially useful where the pipe orientation is fixed but the nozzle aim point requires a direction the pipe cannot reach directly.
