Most fire extinguishers are designed for the situations most people are in a kitchen, an office, a retail floor, a garage. The Ansul Redline was designed for everything else.

The Core Difference: Cartridge-Operated vs. Stored Pressure
This is the engineering decision that separates the Redline from most of the extinguishers in the market and understanding it explains every other advantage the unit offers.

A standard stored-pressure extinguisher keeps the propellant gas and the dry chemical agent together in the same cylinder, under continuous pressure, from the day it's filled until the day it's used or inspected. That constant pressure works fine in a climate-controlled commercial building. In an industrial environment with temperature swings, vibration, rough handling, and extended standby periods, that design allows for slow pressure loss that can silently compromise the unit during extended standby in demanding industrial environments.
The Redline stores the dry chemical in a non-pressurized cylinder. The propellant, either CO2 or nitrogen, is stored in a separate cartridge. The cylinder sits at atmospheric pressure until the unit is activated. When the operator punctures the cartridge at the moment of use, the propellant drives the agent through the hose and nozzle.
The practical results of this design:
- No slow pressure loss during standby. A unit that hasn't been used in a year hasn't been slowly venting propellant for a year. The agent tank is unpressurized until it's needed.
- Inspectable at any time without depressurizing. All moving parts are accessible without discharging the unit to relieve pressure first.
- On-the-spot recharge in the field. Cartridges can be replaced in the field, making these units rechargeable on-site without specialized equipment. In a remote industrial location where sending a unit back to a service shop means days without coverage, this matters operationally.
- Durability under vibration and rough handling. Tough carbon steel shells resist impact, vibration, and corrosion, and special polyester powder paints provide superior protection against cracking and chipping.
Agent Options: Matching the Redline to the Hazard
The Redline isn't one product. It's a platform that carries different agents depending on what the facility actually needs.
FORAY (ABC Dry Chemical)
The FORAY agent is monoammonium phosphate, the same agent class as a standard ABC extinguisher, but in the Redline's cartridge-operated delivery system. The 10 lb model is rated 1-A:20-B:C with a 9-second discharge and an 11-foot range. The 20 lb model achieves a 40-B:C rating, and the 30 lb. model achieves 80-B:C. FORAY is the general industrial choice for facilities with a mixed hazard profile covering ordinary combustibles, flammable liquids, and energized electrical equipment.
Purple-K (BC Dry Chemical)
Purple-K (potassium bicarbonate) is a BC-rated agent with superior performance on flammable liquid and gas fires compared to monoammonium phosphate. It carries no Class A rating, which means it's specified for environments where the primary hazard is a Class B fire, specifically fuel, solvent, or chemical fires, and ordinary combustibles are either absent or not the primary concern. Purple-K is the standard choice in oil and gas, petrochemical, and aviation fueling environments.
MET-L-X (Class D)
Class D dry powder agents are available in 30 lb Redline extinguisher models, giving facilities that handle combustible metals a cartridge-operated delivery system for Class D suppression alongside the reliability and field-recharge advantages of the Redline platform. Model Variants Worth Knowing
Standard vs. High Flow (HF)
High Flow models are equipped with a special nozzle and nozzle tip to maximize agent flow rate at over 1 lb per second of agent. The nozzle handle is painted red to differentiate it from standard flow extinguishers. High Flow models are designed specifically for three-dimensional, pressure, and obstacle Class B fire hazards as defined under NFPA 10, including pressurized fuel fires and fires involving flowing or spraying flammable liquids.
Low Temperature (LT)
Low Temperature models are equipped with a nitrogen cartridge, cartridge receiver, and hose listed and approved for operation in environments with temperatures as low as -65°F (-54°C). Standard models use CO2 cartridges, which lose effectiveness at extreme cold. LT models are specified for outdoor industrial environments in northern climates, cold storage facilities, and any application where the unit will see temperatures that would compromise a standard CO2 cartridge.
Indicator Fill Cap (I Models)
The Indicator Fill Cap variant uses a fill cap that pops up a red stem when the unit is pressurized, providing an immediate visual readiness check without any tools. This model is particularly useful in high-unit-count facilities or remote site installations where a technician needs to visually confirm readiness across multiple units quickly during a walkthrough.
Hand Portable vs. Wheeled Units
The Redline line covers both configurations, and the choice between them is about the scale of the fire risk rather than the environment.
Hand portable units are available in 10, 20, and 30 lb. configurations for situations requiring mobility and direct operator response. These are the units mounted at fixed locations throughout a facility for initial response.
Wheeled units are made specifically to protect people and property in areas where the potential for large-scale fires is always present. They have greater extinguishing agent capacities than hand portable units yet are highly mobile and can be fully operated by one person. Large diameter steel wheels quickly and easily move the unit to the source of the fire, while a quick-opening valve option allows for fast, one-step actuation.
Wheeled units are specified for airports, loading docks, steel and iron mills, spray paint booths, dip and quench tanks, offshore platforms, loading racks, fuel storage, and heavy manufacturing areas.
Where the Redline Actually Belongs
The Redline is not a general commercial extinguisher. It's a unit specified for situations where an ordinary stored-pressure extinguisher isn't adequate for the risk or the environment. The clearest signals that a facility needs the Redline over a standard unit:
- The facility operates in chemical, petrochemical, oil and gas, mining, aviation, or power generation.
- The environment involves temperature extremes, persistent vibration, or rough handling that would compromise a standard unit's pressure integrity over time.
- The location is remote or difficult to service, making on-site field recharge a meaningful operational requirement rather than convenience.
- The fire hazard is large-scale, involving bulk flammable liquids, pressurized fuel systems, or three-dimensional fire risks where a standard flow rate isn't adequate.
- Downtime for unit servicing is operationally unacceptable, and the facility needs to minimize the gap between discharge and restored coverage.
If none of these apply, a standard stored-pressure unit is likely adequate, and the Redline's premium is not justified by the risk profile. The Redline earns its cost in environments where the standard alternatives carry risks the Redline was specifically engineered to eliminate.

When you're assessing an industrial client's extinguisher inventory, the Redline conversation usually comes up in one of two ways: either a safety director already knows they need it and is looking for a distributor, or a facility has been running standard stored-pressure units in an environment that's been slowly compromising their pressure integrity for years without anyone noticing.
The pressure-loss-during-standby problem with standard units in industrial environments is particularly easy to miss on annual inspections because a unit that's lost some pressure during the year may still read in the green zone on inspection day, then fail to perform adequately when it's actually needed.
