When the fire system trips, the control head releases the tension on that cable. Inside the gas valve, a heavy-duty spring instantly slams the valve shut, cutting off the gas supply.

The Pros

  • Failsafe Reliability: Because it relies on tension and a mechanical spring, it doesn't care if the power grid goes down. If the system fires, the gas shuts off.
  • Simplified Installation: It requires no electrical wiring, meaning a certified fire technician can install it without needing to bring in a licensed electrician.
  • Lower Maintenance: With no electronic solenoids to burn out, these valves can last for decades if kept clean and free of physical damage.

The Cons (When NOT to Use Them)

Routing Limitations: Mechanical valves are limited by the physical cable. You can only run a cable so far, and you can only use a specific number of corner pulleys before the friction becomes too great for the system to operate smoothly. If your gas line is located far away from the control panel or requires a maze of routing, a mechanical valve will fail testing.

2. Electrical Gas Valves (The Flexible Solution)

When a kitchen layout is complex, or the main gas shut-off is located in a basement or on the roof, an electrical gas valve is the required solution.

How They Work

Instead of a steel cable, this system relies on a micro-switch located inside the fire suppression control box, wired to an electric solenoid on the gas valve.

These valves operate on a "Normally Closed" logic. This means they require a constant electrical current to stay open. When the fire system activates, the micro-switch flips, cutting the power to the valve. Without power, the valve drops shut instantly.

The Pros

  • Infinite Routing: Wires don't suffer from friction. You can place an electrical gas valve hundreds of feet away from the control panel.
  • Power Outage Safety: Because it is "normally closed," if the building loses power, the gas shuts off automatically, preventing unlit gas from pooling in the kitchen during a blackout.

The Cons

The Electrician Requirement: Installing one requires coordinating between your fire protection contractor and a licensed electrician to run the high-voltage lines.

The Manual Reset Relay: This is where many installations fail inspection. You cannot simply wire an electrical gas valve directly to the fire system. It must be wired through a manual reset relay (such as the Ansul 426151).

3. The Critical Role of the Manual Reset Relay

If you are using an electrical gas valve, understanding the manual reset relay is non-negotiable.

Explosion hazard: Imagine your building loses power for five seconds and then the power comes back on. If your gas valve was wired directly, it would open back up immediately. If a pilot light had gone out during those five seconds, the open valve would start pumping raw gas into the kitchen, creating an extreme explosion hazard.

The manual reset relay features "latching" logic. Once the power is cut (either by a fire or a blackout), the relay locks the circuit open. The gas will not turn back on until a human being physically walks over to the box, verifies the cooking line is safe, and pushes the manual reset button.

4. The Sizing Factor

Whether you choose mechanical or electrical, you must size the valve correctly. Gas valves are sized by the diameter of the pipe (e.g., 3/4", 1", 1-1/2", 2", up to 3").

Do not restrict flow: If your main gas line is 1-1/4", you cannot use a 1" valve with reducer fittings. You must use a 1-1/4" valve. Restricting the flow will starve your appliances of gas, causing your burners and fryers to operate improperly.
