Portable extinguishers then fall under NFPA 10, which governs selection, placement, and maintenance. The key point is that NFPA 33 requires portable extinguishers to be provided and positioned in accordance with NFPA 10, so both standards apply and you can't satisfy one without the other.

Paint Booths Are an Extra Hazard Occupancy

This is where a lot of shop owners get it wrong, usually because nobody explained the classification to them and they're using whatever was already on the wall.

Many spray booths, particularly in automotive refinish, use fixed dry chemical suppression systems inside the booth, using sodium bicarbonate or potassium bicarbonate (Purple K) agents, with automatic activation via fusible links, heat detectors, or flame detectors, and manual activation via a pull station located outside the booth.

That pull station location isn't arbitrary. A person responding to a fire inside an active spray booth should not be entering the booth to access a suppression control. The pull station outside the booth, combined with the fixed system inside, means the suppression response happens without anyone having to go in.

Portable extinguishers play a supporting role here, not the primary one. They're positioned outside the booth for initial response to a fire that's either caught early or has extended beyond the booth perimeter. They're not the first line of defense inside the booth during active spray operations. Paint overspray accumulates on nozzles, ducts, and spray lines, which means a poorly maintained fixed system can have its discharge blocked when it's needed most, which is exactly why regular maintenance of both the fixed system and the portable units matters equally in this environment.

The Overspray Problem You Can't Ignore

This is the detail that connects extinguisher maintenance to the broader fire risk in a way most shop operators don't think about until an inspector points it out.

Overspray buildup in a paint booth is flammable fuel accumulating in a concentrated space over time.
