Why This Product Exists at All
Standard fire extinguishers were designed around fire classes that have been well understood for decades. Class A for ordinary combustibles. Class B for flammable liquids. Class C for energized electrical equipment. The agents inside them, dry chemical, CO2, water, clean agents, were all developed to interrupt one of the three legs of the traditional fire triangle: fuel, oxygen, or heat.
Lithium-ion battery fires don't cooperate with that framework. A lithium battery undergoing thermal runaway isn't just burning. It's generating its own oxygen internally through a chemical decomposition process, which means smothering the fire from the outside doesn't stop what's happening on the inside. Dry chemical sits on top of a burning battery and does very little. CO2 briefly suppresses visible flames and then the battery reignites because the internal reaction is still running. Water cools the outside of the cell but struggles to penetrate fast enough to interrupt the chain reaction inside.
What Vermiculite Is
Vermiculite is a naturally occurring mineral that's been used in horticulture and construction for decades, most commonly as a soil additive or insulation material. Its defining property is what happens when it's exposed to extreme heat: it expands rapidly, sometimes up to 30 times its original volume, forming a lightweight, heat-resistant structure that doesn't burn and doesn't conduct heat well.
This isn't a new discovery. Vermiculite's thermal properties have been understood and used industrially for a long time. What's new is the specific formulation that Victory developed to suspend it in an aqueous (water-based) dispersion that can be pressurized, stored in a standard extinguisher cylinder, and discharged controllably onto a burning battery.
What AVD Does to a Lithium Fire
When the Victory 6L AVD is discharged onto a lithium-ion battery fire, the aqueous vermiculite dispersion does three things simultaneously, and the combination of all three is what makes it effective where single-mechanism agents fall short.
It coats and encapsulates the burning cells.
The dispersion forms a thick, mineral-based coating over the battery as it's applied. That coating physically separates the burning cells from surrounding air and from each other, which is critical in a multi-cell battery pack where thermal runaway in one cell is trying to propagate to the adjacent cells. Stopping that propagation is often the difference between a contained incident and a total loss.
It cools the battery surface rapidly.
The water content in the dispersion provides immediate cooling on contact, pulling heat away from the battery surface faster than the internal reaction can replace it. This is the same principle that makes water effective on Class A fires, applied here in a controlled way that doesn't cause the steam explosion risk you'd get from a standard pressurized water unit on certain battery types.
The vermiculite layer insulates against reignition.
Once the water component evaporates, the expanded vermiculite remains as a dry, heat-resistant mineral crust over the battery cells. That crust continues to insulate the cells from the surrounding environment, reducing the risk of reignition after the initial discharge, which is one of the most dangerous characteristics of lithium battery fires. A fire that looks out can reignite from residual internal heat, sometimes minutes or even hours later, and the vermiculite layer works against that.
No single standard agent does all three of these things. That's the point.
Why 6 Liters Specifically
The "6L" in the product name refers to the volume of the AVD dispersion inside the canister, not a weight rating the way most traditional extinguisher sizing works. This is worth understanding because it means the sizing logic is different from what most people are used to.
Traditional extinguisher sizing (the numbers in ratings like 2A:10B:C) reflects the area or quantity of fire the agent can suppress. AVD sizing in liters reflects the volume of dispersion available to coat and encapsulate battery cells, and the coverage you need scales with the size of the battery pack you're protecting, not just the intensity of the fire.
A 6L unit is appropriate for the battery sizes found in most consumer and light commercial applications: e-bikes, e-scooters, power tool battery banks, and smaller EV battery modules. Larger battery installations, commercial EV charging infrastructure, or industrial battery storage rooms may warrant a larger unit or a purpose-built suppression system rather than a handheld extinguisher.

What It Doesn't Replace

That means a space with both a lithium battery risk and a standard flammable liquid or electrical fire risk needs both an AVD unit and an appropriately rated conventional extinguisher, positioned for the specific hazards in each zone.
