Note: The CR-I-LX-350-C is Not UL Listed. LITH-X agent is a specialized dry powder for Class D combustible metal fires. Class D extinguisher ratings do not follow the standard UL A/B/C rating system. The absence of a UL listing reflects the specialized nature of this hazard rather than any product deficiency. This unit must be specified by a qualified fire protection engineer based on a documented assessment of the Class D hazard present in your facility.

LITH-X Agent and Class D Metal Fires

LITH-X is a graphite-based dry powder. When applied to a burning lithium or lithium alloy fire, the graphite particles smother the burning metal surface, exclude air and moisture, and provide a thermal barrier that cools the metal below its ignition temperature. Unlike water and most standard fire suppressants — which react violently with burning lithium — LITH-X is chemically inert with respect to lithium, preventing the explosive steam generation and hydrogen evolution that makes water-based suppression of lithium fires so dangerous. The agent is also effective on zirconium, titanium, and sodium-potassium alloy fires where similar Class D suppression principles apply.

The CR-I-LX-350-C requires the same NFPA 10 maintenance schedule as other Red Line wheeled units, with additional considerations for the specialized Class D nature of LITH-X agent:

• Monthly Visual Inspection: Verify nitrogen cylinder safety seal is intact, wheels and tires are undamaged, and the nozzle and hose are free of damage or moisture ingress. LITH-X agent is sensitive to moisture — verify the fill cap seal is intact. Confirm inspection tags are current.
• Annual Maintenance: A certified technician familiar with Class D agents must inspect all components and verify agent condition. Do not substitute any other agent for LITH-X.
• 6-Year Internal Examination: Full internal inspection per NFPA 10 including agent removal and replacement with fresh Ansul-approved LITH-X dry powder.
• 12-Year Hydrostatic Test: The welded steel agent tank must undergo hydrostatic pressure testing to verify structural integrity.

Why is this unit Not UL Listed?

Standard UL fire extinguisher listing covers Class A, B, C, and D ratings. Class D extinguisher certification is not a standardized UL listing in the same way as A/B/C ratings — Class D agents are evaluated for effectiveness on specific metal types rather than through a universal test standard. Why is water dangerous on a lithium fire?

Burning lithium reacts violently with water, producing hydrogen gas and lithium hydroxide. The hydrogen can ignite explosively, dramatically escalating the fire. LITH-X's graphite-based formulation is chemically inert with respect to lithium and suppresses the fire without triggering this secondary reaction — making it the only safe agent for direct application to burning lithium metal.

Is LITH-X effective on lithium-ion battery fires?

LITH-X is designed for lithium metal (Class D) fires, not lithium-ion battery thermal runaway events. Lithium-ion batteries contain lithium in an intercalated or ionic form rather than as free metallic lithium. Lithium-ion battery fires involve thermal runaway and require different suppression strategies, typically focused on sustained cooling.
