Description
E-FireX EFX9L | 9 Liter Lithium Battery Fire Extinguisher | TRPL-E Encapsulator Agent

The E-FireX EFX9L is a 9-liter (2.5 gallon) portable fire extinguisher engineered specifically for lithium battery fires — a hazard that conventional dry chemical, CO2, and standard water extinguishers are not designed to handle effectively. It is the largest portable unit in the E-FireX line and is sized for larger shops, battery storage areas, EV service facilities, and industrial operations handling significant volumes of lithium battery-powered equipment.

The agent inside is TRPL-E, a patented all-natural mineral-based encapsulator developed by E-FireX specifically to combat the unique challenges of lithium battery thermal runaway. When applied, the water content in the TRPL-E formula rapidly cools the burning cells, while the mineral solids reach the fire source and form a physical encapsulating barrier that cuts off oxygen and locks in toxic off-gassing. This combination of rapid cooling and physical encapsulation addresses the two most dangerous characteristics of a lithium battery fire: extreme heat (cells can reach temperatures exceeding 2,500°F during thermal runaway) and the continuous release of flammable and toxic vapors that make re-ignition a persistent risk even after initial knockdown.

TRPL-E is 100% biodegradable, fluorine-free, non-toxic, and contains no PFAS, PFOS, or PFOA. It is recognized under NFPA 18A wetting agent guidelines and carries UL certification for Class A suppression (UL-EX29100). The EFX9L is also rated effective on Class B, C, and D fires, making it a versatile single-unit solution for mixed-hazard environments.

Important Note on Classification: Underwriter Laboratories has not yet established specific test criteria for lithium-ion battery fire protection, and NFPA does not currently recognize a standalone fire hazard classification specifically for lithium-ion battery fires. As a result, lithium-ion battery fires are addressed within existing fire classifications depending on the materials involved. Suppression strategies typically emphasize sustained cooling consistent with Class A fire response principles. E-FireX is actively working with NFPA on draft language for a new "L" classification for lithium battery fires.

Standard fire extinguishers fail on lithium battery fires for a straightforward reason: lithium cells undergoing thermal runaway generate their own oxygen internally through a chemical decomposition process. You cannot simply smother a lithium fire the way you would a fuel or paper fire — the cell keeps generating heat and oxygen from within. TRPL-E works differently.

  • Rapid Cooling: The water component of the TRPL-E formula absorbs heat from burning cells immediately on contact, bringing surface temperatures down faster than water alone due to the encapsulator chemistry's heat exchange properties.
  • Physical Encapsulation: The mineral solids in the formula reach the fire source and form a coating around the affected cells. This barrier contains toxic off-gassing, cuts off external oxygen, and physically isolates the thermal event — reducing the risk of propagation to adjacent cells in the battery pack.
  • No Toxic Runoff: Unlike water application on lithium fires, TRPL-E does not produce contaminated runoff. The agent is biodegradable and safe to handle shortly after the fire is extinguished.
  • Re-ignition Prevention: The encapsulating barrier remains in place after discharge, continuing to suppress the residual heat that causes lithium battery fires to re-ignite hours after initial suppression.

The EFX9L is the right unit for any environment where large-format or high-volume lithium battery equipment is present:

  • EV Service and Repair Shops: The primary use case for the 9L unit. Electric vehicle battery packs contain hundreds or thousands of individual lithium cells — a single thermal runaway event can cascade rapidly. The EFX9L provides the agent volume needed to address a larger battery fire before it propagates.
  • Battery Storage Facilities: Warehouses and distribution centers storing lithium battery inventory, including e-bike, power tool, and consumer electronics batteries.
  • Solar and Home Energy Storage: Home power walls, solar battery banks, and similar large-format residential and commercial energy storage systems.
  • Industrial and Fleet Operations: Facilities operating lithium-powered forklifts, ground support equipment, and industrial power tools.
  • Marine and RV: Vessels and recreational vehicles with lithium house battery banks where fire suppression options are limited by space and weight.
  • Emergency Response: Fire departments and industrial response teams requiring a portable lithium-capable agent for initial attack on EV and battery fires.

The EFX9L follows standard NFPA 10 portable fire extinguisher maintenance requirements:

  • Monthly Visual Inspection: Verify the pressure gauge is in the green zone, the safety pin and tamper seal are intact, and the nozzle is unobstructed. Confirm the unit is mounted in its designated location and accessible.
  • Annual Professional Service: A certified fire extinguisher technician must conduct an external examination per NFPA 10, verify agent condition, and update the inspection tag and service record.
  • Hydrostatic Testing: Follow the hydrostatic testing interval specified on the extinguisher label per NFPA 10 requirements for the cylinder type.
  • Post-Discharge: After any discharge the unit must be recharged with fresh TRPL-E agent by a certified service technician before being returned to service. Do not substitute other agents.

Why can't I just use a standard ABC extinguisher on a lithium battery fire?

Standard ABC dry chemical agents interrupt the chemical chain reaction of a conventional fire, but lithium cells in thermal runaway generate their own internal heat and oxygen through electrochemical decomposition. Dry chemical cannot cool the cells fast enough to stop this internal reaction, and the fire can re-ignite after the powder settles. TRPL-E both cools the cells rapidly and physically encapsulates them to interrupt the thermal runaway cycle.

Why is the 9L unit recommended for shops over the smaller sizes?

The 1L and 2L E-FireX units are appropriate for personal devices, e-bikes, and small battery packs. The 9L provides the agent volume needed for larger battery systems — EV packs, home power walls, battery storage racks, and industrial battery-powered equipment — where a smaller unit may not deliver enough agent to fully suppress and encapsulate a larger thermal event before it propagates.

Is TRPL-E safe to use indoors?

Yes. TRPL-E is non-toxic, non-abrasive, and produces no harmful byproducts on discharge. It does not create the powder cloud associated with dry chemical agents and does not produce toxic runoff. Ventilate the area after any lithium battery fire event regardless of the extinguisher used, as the battery cells themselves release toxic gases during thermal runaway.

Does the "D" in the UL rating mean it is rated for all Class D metals?

The TRPL-E agent is rated effective on lithium (a Class D metal) and other Class D combustible metal fires. However, Class D fire suppression requirements vary significantly by metal type. For non-lithium Class D hazards such as magnesium, titanium, or sodium, verify the specific application against the E-FireX product data sheet or consult with your fire protection professional before relying on this unit as your primary Class D protection.
